CHEMPaS is offering a new Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Management. This programme is intended to meet the needs of staff working in higher education management and professional services for structured career development.

This is a part-time programme requiring attendance at units. In addition there will be three assignments, each of 4,000 words and a short workplace-based research project.

The dates of the residential units are:

  • Session One - To be confirmed
  • Session Two - To be confirmed
  • Session Three - To be confirmed

Session Four - dates and venue to be decided by PGCHE participants, but this will be a two day course on a Thursday and Friday.

The Course Content:

Session One - Strategic Issues and Evaluation in Higher Education

Key issues under discussion include student numbers, widening participation in higher education, internationalisation and globalisation, regional policy, strategic planning, performance indicators, change management, leadership, quality assurance and assessment (including research and teaching)

Session Two - Organisation and Management in Higher Education

Key issues covered include changing patterns of institutional management, centralisation and devolution, institutional cultures, the 'entrepreneurial' university, marketing in higher education, external relations, the position of professional services, careers and personal development planning.

Session Three - Resource Management in Higher Education

Participants analyse current issues in the financing of higher education, models for resource allocation, management of human and physical resources, income generation, cost-effectiveness and customer care.

In addition to the three residential sessions, participants produce a short workplace-based project in preparation for session four.

Session Four - Group Presentations

This is the final residential module held later in the year. Participants give presentations on their project work. The whole programme is normally completed within one academic year.

Research Projects

Participants undertake a short workplace-based research project on a topic relevant to their own professional experience and institution. Examples of recent projects undertaken by participants include a study of performance indicators in a research-intensive institution; the development of a communications strategy for an estates department; debt recovery in a major research university; the provision of management information related to capital projects; a review of governance and organisational structures in a major university; the development of a new staff induction programme; a review of nursery provision in universities and an assessment of income generation in a small, specialised institution.
