Core Units.

The Foundations of Information Technology (IT) Unit (EDUC 6004) is designed to ensure all participants have an understanding of the chronological development of IT and Information Communications Technology (ICT). It is also intended to provide an introduction to study at masters level.

The Principles of Computer Based Learning Unit (EDUC 6006) provides you with the opportunity to establish a better and more comprehensive understanding of the principles of computer based learning and teaching. You will have the opportunity to develop and refine your academic skills and some practical skills. During this unit you will investigate and review some Learning Theories. The unit also addresses areas such as the Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) and provides an opportunity to visit a major international Educational Computing Exhibition.

The Courseware and Software Design and Evaluation Unit (EDUC2008) is designed to provide an overview of some issues relating to the design and evaluation of CBLT resources. It is a multidisciplinary unit, in that it relates to the principles of design and the principles of evaluation. These principles can be applied to all aspects of computer use and therefore is of value to students from a wide background of experience.

Fundamentally the issues involved are encompassed in developing an understanding of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and the work stems from that area.

The Multimedia Technologies for Learning Unit (EDUC 2010) looks at the impact of the latest developments in multimedia on society and (especially) education. Recent developments in information and communications technology have impacted radically on the way we do things and have a major potential to change the way we understand learning and the way that we teach.

The Authoring the Learning Process Unit (EDUC 6228) examines the electronic process that produces a product. This unit explores aspects of authoring including software paradigms, authoring tools, copyright, publication, distribution and commercial exploitation. The assignment is an authored product that meets your teaching or training needs. This unit provides a practical opportunity to experience a range of authoring and presentation packages and an opportunity to develop materials based upon individual professional needs and personal interests. It aims to give the participants a clear understanding of the range and diversity of authoring packages used in the development of e-learning and blended learning solutions.

The Educational Research Methods unit (EDUC 6190) looks at the essential paradigms used in educational research and provides students with a working background which will support both their research and the writing of their research report. It covers a wide range of issues, including understanding and interpreting data, data collection methods, the importance of reliability, validity, triangulation and research ethics.

The Dissertation Studies unit (EDUC 6194) is designed to support students in the writing of their dissertation. It covers the choice of topic, the development of a research question, developing a research proposal, the structure of a dissertation, the development of a critical literature review, referencing conventions and the creation of a bibliography.
