Introduction to our Educational Research

The University of Southampton has a well established international reputation for academic research and is rated among the ten leading UK universities (out of over 150 institutions). With over 100 research students our School of Education is one of the largest and most active centres of educational research in the United Kingdom.

The School has ESRC Recognition for our Research Training. This reflects the quality of our research student’s recruitment process, training and support. It is a mark of recognition that our research training is in line with ESRC guidelines in terms of outcomes, career pathway support, as well as generic training skills and specific methodological techniques.

In the 2001 government Research Assessment Exercises our research was awarded a grade 4, demonstrating our research to be of international and national excellence. We have since further developed our research of international quality including major funded projects and our research infrastructure including a new building housing research staff and students in top quality accommodation.

School of Education staff and research projects are located within our established Research Centres with new developments also emerging from clusters of research active staff and students sharing and exploring common interests. We have good links with researchers working in similar areas in other universities and with the educational community locally, nationally and internationally. We welcome international visitors and researchers regularly to Southampton.
