Introduction to our Educational Research
The University of Southampton combines academic excellence with an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to research, supporting a culture that engages and challenges students in their pursuit of learning. The School of Education's structure and culture of interdisciplinary collaboration enables us to pioneer vital new fields and shape tomorrow's thinking.
We are justifiably proud to have been recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for our Research Training. The ESRC is the leading UK body responsible for funding and supporting the next generation of researchers to become world class and ESRC recognition reflects the high quality of our student recruitment process, and in the training and support they receive. Our students are taught by researchers at the forefront of knowledge in their fields providing research training that is in line with ESRC guidelines in terms of outcomes, career pathway support, as well as generic training skills and specific methodological techniques.
In the 2008 government Research Assessment Exercise 80% of School of Education research was judged to be of international quality with over a third internationally excellent or world-leading. Across the University the quality of the research activity was rated very highly and Southampton is among the top research universities, standing 14th in the UK.
The school has a new landmark building providing our students with top quality teaching and research accommodation. Three established research centres provide support for staff, major funded projects and a range of other research projects as well as providing support and activities for our research students. New and exciting developments often emerge from clusters of research active staff and students sharing and exploring common interests. An international focus is fundamental to our strategic vision and we welcome a wide range of international visitors and researchers regularly to Southampton.
