Project details: Creating and Managing Expansive Apprenticeships

Research Team

Funding Body

Learning and Skills Council

Duration

January 2009 - December 2009

Description

The purpose of this project is to prepare a Guide for training providers and employers to support them in the creation and management of more expansive apprenticeship programmes. Previous research has shown how apprenticeship programmes vary in terms of the nature and scope of the learning opportunities they offer, with some being more ‘expansive’ and some more ‘restrictive’ in character. A range of case studies will be conducted to generate examples of good and improving practice in apprenticeship provision. The Guide will present the ‘expansive-restrictive continuum’ in everyday language and will show, through illustrations from the case studies, how it can be used to improve apprenticeship programmes at both Level 2 and 3, and in different sectors.
