Biography
Having coached female artistic gymnastics for some years I came to the conclusion that the level of education received on coaching courses was insufficient in order to provide essential training to the elite performer. I therefore decided to study for a degree that would give me the knowledge level I was looking for. My undergraduate studies were completed at Chichester Institute of Higher Education culminating in a BSc(Hons) in Sport Studies, awarded by the University of Southampton. The institute then gained the status of University College and I obtained an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science, completing a physiology pathway. From Chichester I transferred to Canterbury Christ Church University College in order to undertake research into the myogenic and neurogenic constraints to achieving greater range of joint motion. From this research position I then transferred onto the lecturing staff in order to become field leader in Biomechanics and Movement Analysis, within the department of Sport Science, Tourism & Leisure. Biomechanics was a new pathway for Christ Church and new courses were written in order to take the subject right through to the third year. Whilst teaching and developing these new courses I undertook a further period of study in the guise of the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (Higher Education). This two-year part time course lead to me receiving my postgraduate certificate and entry into the Higher Education Academy.
During this period of establishing myself as a lecturer in sport and exercise my original research rather came to a standstill, although some work was published. New research interests have developed though, since joining the staff here in Southampton in 2004.
My teaching load is now based in research methods and statistics along with coaching and teaching issues within sport and physical education. Prior to my academic career I helped teach games and P.E. in a primary school as well as working for many years as a gymnastics coach. This background provides me with sound practical experience on which to base the theory I now deliver.
I am currently registered for an MPhil/PhD with the University of Southampton. As part of this I am undertaking research into first year undergraduate expectations of their degree courses in sport and their perceptions of their first year experiences.
