Biography

I undertook my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Loughborough University. I was always interested in sport during my school years and I represented my school, local clubs and county at various sports (swimming, badminton, hurdles, volleyball, and netball) and hence, it was an obvious progression to go and study sport at the famous Loughborough University.

I graduated from Loughborough with a BSc, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and a Masters degree. My Masters Degree project investigated how maximum oxygen uptake could be estimated from sub-maximal exercise on a rowing ergometer and was later published in the Journal of Sport Sciences. Whilst at Loughborough University I reached the pinnacle of my volleyball playing career when I represented GB Students at 2 World Student Games (Zagreb in 1987 and Sheffield in 1991).

After qualifying as a teacher I taught in a senior school for 2 years before moving on to provide sport science support to the GB Men’s Hockey Squad and later to my current post teaching in Higher Education here at Southampton.

My teaching and research interests are not only in sport but also in other areas of education: over the years I have been involved in projects exploring innovative and new teaching methods. I am currently investigating plagiarism in Higher Education as part of my PhD research.

I am currently the Programme Director for the undergraduate sport programmes. On the sport programmes I teach the physiology based units such as the level 3 module The Limits of Human Performance, the level 2 module Principles of Fitness and Training, and the level 1 module Sport and Exercise Physiology.
