Biography

Michael Grenfell is Professor of Education at the School of Education in the Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Southampton, UK. He has three main areas of research focus: Second Language Learning and Teaching; Teacher Education; and Philosophy of Education. He has a long-standing reputation in the area of Language Learner Strategies and Communicative Language Teaching.

He is author of ‘Modern Languages and Learning Strategies’ (Routledge 1999) and ‘Modern Languages Across the Curriculum’ (Routledge 2002). His own doctoral thesis was on second language teacher education. He has since directed two major European research projects on language teacher training which gave rise to the production of a 'European Profile for Language Teacher Education'. He is author of ‘Training Teaches in Practice’ (Multilingual Matters 1998) and ‘The European Language Teacher’ (Peter Lang 2003). He has taken a special interest on research methodology; in particular, employing the work of the French social philosopher Pierre Bourdieu. He is author of ‘Bourdieu and Education’ (Falmer 1998) and ‘Pierre Bourdieu: Agent Provocateur’ (Continuum 2004); Art Rules (Berg 2007) and Bourdieu: Education and Training (Continuum 2007)

Michael is a frequent contributor to conferences, academic journals and books. He was Chair of the Research Committee of UCET (UK Universities Council for Teacher Education) and a member of the CILT committee for teacher education. He has sat on various ministry advisory groups.
