Just over an hour from London by train, Southampton and Winchester are surrounded by beautiful countryside, and offer easy access to some of the south coast's most famous attractions including the New Forest, Stonehenge, the Isle of Wight, the Dorset coast and a wealth of beaches for surfing and sailing.
Southampton city is rapidly developing its image as the cultural capital of the south coast. West Quay, one of the largest shopping complexes in the south of England is located right in the heart of the city. Mayflower Park sits on the water's edge and is a popular place to watch famous cruise liners, such as the QE2 and Oriana, as they set sail from their home port. It also hosts the annual Southampton Boat Show each September as sailing is very popular in this area.
Cultural and entertainment attractions include a thriving live music culture, the Mayflower Theatre (national opera companies, ballet, theatre, comedy and pantomime), the Gantry Arts Centre and the Harbour Lights Cinema (both of which are committed to showing less mainstream productions). Also, an award-winning City Art Gallery, the Southampton Guildhall (a leading concert and event venue) , a Premier League football team with a brand-new stadium, a well-provided sports centre with dry ski facilities, and an Olympic-size swimming pool.
