Frequently Asked Questions by International Students
1. What if I want to bring my family?
If you wish your spouse and children under eighteen to come and live with you, they must apply for entry clearance as your dependants. This will only be valid for the length of your stay. You will also need to provide evidence that you have additional funds above your own needs to support your family and you will have to show this before you receive permission for your family to join you. You should note that family accommodation is much more expensive than single person accommodation especially in the private sector.
2. Do I need to register with the Police?
You will need to register with the Police if your visa states \"Register with UK police on arrival\" or \"Register with the police within seven days\". You must do this within seven days of your arrival in the UK. You also will need to contact them if you change address. Any dependants will also need to register.
3. Will I be eligible for free NHS health care?
If you are on a course of study that lasts six months or more, you and your dependants are entitled to free health care from the National Health Service (NHS) relating to any condition which occurs after your arrival in the UK. This means you may register as a patient with an NHS doctor, known as a General Practitioner (or GP), and dentist. If a doctor prescribes a course of medicine for you, you may have to pay the prescription charge and you may have to pay for dental treatment.
4. How can I find a School for my child?
If your child will be in the UK for more than six months, they are allowed to go to a state school free of charge until the end of their stay in the UK as your dependant. By law, children in the UK must start school at the beginning of the term after their fifth birthday. Free state schooling is only available for children up to the age of sixteen. If your child is between the ages of sixteen to eighteen, they will be able to study at a local college, but a tuition fee will be payable.
5. Can I drive a car in Great Britain?
If you drive a car in Great Britain you must make sure that the car is registered, taxed and insured for your use. It is against the law to drive without all the documents relating to registration, road tax and insurance being fully up-to-date. If you have a full driving licence from an EEA country you are allowed to drive in Great Britain for as long as your licence remains valid.
If you have a licence issued by a non-EEA country you are allowed to drive in the UK for 12 months after your arrival using your international licence but after your first 12 months in Great Britain you must have a full GB licence. This may involve taking a GB practical driving and theory test, so you are advised to plan for this.
